Hi,

I know this is a shot in the dark but I know a lot of you good people have done stuff like this;

I bought a 1948 Allis Chalmers "C" and I'm wondering if any of you have ever retrofitted a 3 point hitch onto something similar? It does not have live hydraulics but does have a PTO.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

My '42 Farmall H needs one too, Tractor Supply lists an aftermarket one, 750.00 though. They probably list one for an A. C. You can use an old power steering pump for your hydraulics. Surplus Center has Hydraulics also.

Kits are available, some simple web searches should turn them up. If you can't find one let me know. Or were you looking for more of DIY project?

Not sure what you know about Allis-Challmers equipment of the 40s-50s. If you intend on using the factory hydraulics there some things you should understand. AC hydraulics of that era were low volume high pressure systems. The book for each tractor would have a max displacement guideline for a "remote" cylinder. Today pressure isn't a concern because if I recall correctly they were something like 3500 psi. Well within the working range of modern gear. However you still should be careful to reasonably observe some size contains. I don't think it would be an issue on the little C its not a heavy tractor, and the size of the cylinder you'd need would be rather small.

You can use the kits for the arms etc but if you have a magneto hole available you can with the addition of a reservoir and pump have live hydraulics.

You should be able to find a fast hitch that will bolt right up. It's almost as good as a 3 point. We put one on a 300, which is pretty much an H with live hydraulics.

Please tell me more about the fast hitch, My friend has a 300 and it has the same hitch as mine.

Sure have... Depends on what you want to do for how to set it up. I built a really simplified set up for my grandpas Farmall H just for his snowblower. All it needed to do was hold the blower off the ground for transport... So that's all I made it do.

There's a guy near Flint Mich who makes 3 point conversion kits for Farmalls (like H, M, and 300-350-400-450) before they became standard stuff. I forgot his name but I think there is still a web presence if he's still in business.

edit: link, its basically a guy and his disabled brother who work out of a big barn. I think they have a large inventory of Farmall parts too stored in the barns....been there once Way OT- ALLIS CHALMERS 3 POINT RETROFIT? (3)

3 Point Conversion Kit/Allis Chalmers - Saginaw County Tractor Parts

The live hydraulic thing is a little bit trickier. Some sort of drive gear is needed off the engine, although I suppose it could be a belt driven affair ala power steering pump. There are tractorhoes (sort of primitive smaller backhoes attached to a utility tractor) and loader conversions which use a "front PTO" which basically would be a live hydraulic setup direct shaft-drive off the crank pulley, with appropriate guarding. You get into some considerations about displacement per rev and selection of how the unloading feature works and a sump at that point. If you know someone with experience, thats perfect, if not, study other Allis designs as they are usually pretty simple at that point and you might be able to find parts if a lot of them were built.

Proturn, Take a look at "The Unofficial Allis-Chalmers Forum" Lots of info and 3pt. kits available from the sites supporting advertisers.

http://www.allischalmers.com/new/forum/default.asp

I've built and converted a couple of 3pt. set-ups for my old A-C model Bs and use the existing hydraulics, I have not found the need for LIVE hydraulics for the 3 pt.
True enough, I did add a "front pump" to my loader equipped B and in so doing was able to power it's 3pt hitch "live".
If using the existing high pressure low volume pump make sure you size and plumb your cylinders for 3500psi and low volume (small piston/ram dia.).

edit, sorry about the "non"-link, just google "Allis Chalmers Forum"

To get results! Thanks to all that chimed in. I've got some reading and research to do. Thanks for posting all links!
